The Cost-Per-Wear Theory

A prominent figurehead in fashion once said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

You would’ve probably have guessed who said that. And the man’s absolutely right – in fact, no one does style quite like Monsieur de Saint Laurent. In this article, let us share some tips to keep your fashion A-game on point at all times, without wasting a single cent.

To help you, here are some tips that our editor swears by.

 1.     What is your style?
What words would you use to describe your style? Quirky? Minimalist? Classic? Once you’ve worked out (at least) three words that suit you, aim towards a wardrobe that best befits the terms! For example, if you’re a minimalist, it wouldn’t make sense to splurge on a dress with bold prints and colours.

 2.     Is it something that you would wear, say, 3 years down the road?
When faced with a piece of item that’s slightly on the pricier side, consider these questions: Is it of good quality? Will you be wearing this often? Will the future you look back at this piece of clothing and judge your current self for making a terrible choice?

 3.     What would you wear this with?
We wouldn’t want you to blow your cash on a piece of apparel that can only be worn once in a blue moon. If an edgy top catches your eye, will you be able to wear it with your favourite midi skirt? What about your comfiest jeans? It’s always a good idea to think about how many possible outfits you can create before making the commitment.

 4.     How often would you wear something like this?
If it’s not an everyday piece, is it worth the purchase? Is it something that cannot be worn on a rotation basis (perhaps it features crazy prints that are easily recognizable), or something that wouldn’t work well for work? Because let’s face it: if you’re a working adult, chances are you’ll be spending at least 5 days at the office.

To put it simply, all you have to do is divide how much an item of clothing costs by the number of times you would wear it. You’ll see that a pair of staple trousers would cost you only $0.15 – and we’re talking about a pair of pants that will take you from work to dinner date.

Understanding the cost-per-wear theory would help you in creating a high quality capsule wardrobe; think essential items that will never go out of fashion, like skirts and trousers that can be augmented with seasonal pieces.

Need help visualizing what a capsule wardrobe would look like? Our favourite influencers have put together a few looks, made up of staple pieces that are timeless and easy to wear.
